The Centre has organised visits and made donations to welfare institutions
such as homes for the aged and orphanages. It has also initiated and participated
in several charity fairs to raise donations for the needy.
During the Hotel New World disaster in 1986, a voluntary group from the Centre
was dispatched to assist in the rescue operation.
In recognition of the Centre's contribution to society,
it was granted the status of a Charitable Organisation on 2nd May, 1989
under the Charities Act Chap (37). In May 1991, a three day Thousand Buddhas
Ceremony was organised by the Centre at the IMM Building.
A few thousand members from different traditions including some monks
participated in the propagation of the Buddha's teachings.
Mani Dungdrub Project 1999, 2001 and 2002 - Recitation of the universal mantra of compassion for world peace
In 1999, Abbot Venerable Shangpa Rinpoche initiated our Centre's first Mani Dungdrub Project to recite 100,000,000 Six-Syllable Mantra of Avalokiteshvara for the welfare of all beings and world peace. The event was named ˇ°Voices of Compassionˇ± and it gave all Buddhist practitioners and devotees the opportunity to participate in this meritorious deed.
The event had attracted many participants from overseas' and local Buddhist organisations.
With the collective and tremendous effort from all the participants,
we successfully achieved 239,788,265 times of the recitation of
the Six-Syllable Mantra. Participants also received teachings
on Avalokiteshvara from our Abbot Venerable Shangpa Rinpoche,
Venerable Seck Wan Fan and Venerable Kwang Phing. It was a commendable
achievement of everyone and a great contribution to the world
peace in the new millennium.
Due to the sufferings in the world and also the popular request by devotees, our
Abbot, Venerable Shangpa Rinpoche advised the Centre to organise
the second Mani Dungdrub Project in 2001 to gather all Buddhist
devotees to pray for the world peace and harmony.
The theme of the event was "Universal Mantra of Compassion", held at our Centre
from 15 December to 31 December 2001. We completed 166, 483, 500
times recitation of the Six-Syllable Mantra, "Om Ma Ni Pad Me
Hung" and dedicated whatever merits accumulated to world peace.
Over the 16 days period of recitation, participants also received teachings and
guidance on the practice of Avalokiteshvara at the Centre in Singapore.
From 14th to 31st December 2002, the theme was the same as in 2001.
This time, we recited 210,707,800 times recitation of the Six-Syllable Mantra.
