HOW THE KARMA KAGYUD LINEAGE HAS BEEN PRESERVED
His Holiness the 17th Karmapa Trinlay Thaye Dorje is the head of the
Karma Kagyud Lineage. The 1st Karmapa, Dusum Khyenpa was one
of the great disciples of Lord Gampopa. He was one of the first in Tibet
to predict his reincarnation and make the bodhisattva vow to come back
and lead sentient beings to gain enlightenment. Lord Gampopa is the
realized master who merged the two streams of the Kadampa and the
Karma Kagyud lineage together and ensured that the teachings flourish.
Lord Gampopa was in turn the sun-like disciple of the well revered and
renowned yogi Milarepa. Milarepa was the only disciple of Marpa, the translator, who received the heart essence of all
Marpa's teachings. Marpa who went through much hardship to obtain teachings from India, translated and transmitted
them, had the pandita Naropa as his main Guru. Pandita Naropa, once a great scholar at the world renowned Buddhist
university of Nalanda, later left Nalanda in order to follow his destined Guru, Tilopa who finally led him to enlightenment.
Tilopa was a great pandita who received teachings directly from Buddha Vajradhara and finally attained enlightenment .
The unbroken lineage from Buddha Vajradhara has thus continued until now and teachings have been well preserved
and maintained subsequently through the reincarnations of the Karmapas and their chosen regents.
ACTIVITIES OF THE 17TH KARMAPA
6th May 2010 is the birthday of this great master, the Karmapa, who gave up enjoying the bliss of Nirvana to come back as a human being, destined to suffer, birth, sickness, old age and death, in order to benefit countless of sentient beings. The 17th Karmapa himself has engaged himself diligently in studying Buddhist philosophy and mastering the rituals and auxiliary knowledge necessary for him to benefit disciples since he was very young. Without thinking of his own tiredness and health, he travels on packed schedules through Europe and Asia to give teachings and empowerments. He conducts himself humbly and is concerned about his disciples' welfare.
