The Importance of having a Lineage |

So as to maintain the authenticity of the teachings and to prevent misinterpretations and wrong practices,
it is of necessity to pass down the teachings from guru to disciple by oral transmissions and to
for the guru to choose disciples carefully. The guru would verify that the disciple
has mastered the teachings before the disciple is certified to be able to spread the
dharma as well. This forms the lineage where the teachings can be traced all the way to the
source of the teachings, in the case of the Kagyud lineage, the primordial Buddha Vajradhara.
