Our Milestones

1979 His Holiness the 14th Kunzig Shamar Rinpoche visited Singapore and advised Mr David Chee Kim Swee and a group of devotees on the set up of Karma Kagyud Buddhist Centre.

A bungalow at No. 17 Jalan Lateh was rented as the venue for administration and Dharma propagation.

1980 His Holiness, the 16th Gyalwa Karmapa Rangjung Rigpe Dorje visited Singapore in December, conducted the Black Hat ceremony and left a pair of his shoes at the Centre, signifying his return in future.
1981 Karma Kagyud Buddhist Centre approved by Registrar of Societies (ROS) on 10 April.
1982 The first management committee was formed on 11 March.

On advice of His Holiness Shamar Rinpoche, Shangpa Rinpoche arrived to become the religious advisor to oversee the development of KKBC.

1989 Approved as a charitable organisation by the Commissioner of Charities (COC) on 2 May.
1990 Shangpa Rinpoche initiated the search for new premises to cater for the expansion of the Centre’s activities.

His Holiness Shamar Rinpoche advised members on the purchase of new premises and started “One Man One Hundred” fund raising campaign.

1991 His Holiness Shamar Rinpoche visited Centre on 18 June to give blessing and encouragement to members on the purchase of the new premises at No. 38 Lorong 22 Geylang.

With the concerted effort of Shangpa Rinpoche, Mr and Mrs Loh Sek Fah, members and devotees, the new premises was purchased.

1992 The Centre was relocated to the new premises on 29 December.
1993 Granted permanent change of use of premises as a Buddhist Institution by URA on 7 November.

The Centre was renovated and celebrated its opening on 14 November with a thousand-people vegetarian dinner.
His Holiness Shamar Rinpoche inaugurated the opening ceremony.

1997 On 14 September, during his 38th birthday celebration, Shangpa Rinpoche initiated the new building project .
1998 Shangpa Rinpoche was enthroned as the abbot on 4 September according to traditional Tibetan Buddhist procedures.
1999 His Holiness, the 17th Gyalwa Karmapa Trinley Dorje visited Singapore from 29 October to 6 November during his first trip overseas.

Organised first Mani Project to recite 100 million Om Mani Padme Hung from 28 November to 31 December for participation by all Kagyud Centres.

2000 Inauguration of KKBC new shrine Hall on 10 September.
2001 His Holiness Shamar Rinpoche visited KKBC from 20 to 25 January during the Lunar New Year celebration and gave teachings to members and devotees.

The Children Dharma Class was launched by His Holiness Shamar Rinpoche on 25 June.

2004 His Holiness Shamar Rinpoche visited KKBC from 13 to 15 February. A welcoming dinner was held at Katong Community Club.
2006 His Holiness, the 17th Gyalwa Karmapa during his visit from 7 to 15 October inaugurated the celebration of KKBC 25th anniversary.
2011 His Holiness Shamar Rinpoche last visited KKBC from 3 to 6 March. He was briefed on the new building plan.
2012 His Holiness, the 17th Gyalwa Karmapa visited KKBC from 25 to 31 May and helped in the fund raising for the new building project.

URA granted written permission on 9 October for KKBC to build new building.

2014 Shangpa Rinpoche launched the fund raising project for KKBC new building on 18 January.

His Holiness ,the 17th Gyalwa Karmapa visits KKBC from 26 September to 3 October to grace the auspicious ground breaking of the new centre building.
