Abbot Venerable Shangpa Rinpoche

Shangpa-RinpocheOur Centre’s abbot Shangpa Rinpoche was born in the year 1960 on the border between Tibet and Nepal. At the age of two years, he was recognised as the reincarnation of the Great Yogi Shangpa Rinpoche by the 16th Karmapa.

In his youth, Shangpa Rinpoche studied Buddhist philosophy and Sanskrit at the Tibetan Institute in Varanasi, India. He received empowerments from many high lamas and rinpoches. At the age of 17 years, he was appointed by His Holiness the 16th Karmapa to be in charge of Jangchub Choeling Monastery and was also officially enthroned as the 2nd Shangpa Rinpoche.

In the year 1982, Shamar Rinpoche–the holder of the Red Crown–tasked Shangpa Rinpoche to propagate the Dharma in Singapore.

Shangpa Rinpoche received Singapore Permanent Resident status in 1996. In the following year, he was appointed as the abbot and religious advisor of Karma Kagyud Buddhist Centre Singapore. He was enthroned as the abbot on 4 September 1998 according to traditional Tibetan Buddhist procedures.

At the same time, he was also appointed as the “Religious Advisor of the Karma Kagyud Dharma Societies in Southeast Asia”. Shangpa Rinpoche is also the abbot and founder of various monasteries and institutes in Nepal.
